Master your PPE!

I have my mask . . . now what?

You know COVID-19 is still here, and you're doing your part to protect yourself and others. Since infections frequently occur when people breathe in contaminated droplets, we need to social distance and correctly wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in order to overcome the virus.

A face mask and mask frame are simple, effective PPE

Want to make your own mask frame?
It's easy, and here's how.

OK, but I'm ready to do more.

Here you will find tips and resources to improve the filtration and practicality of your PPE.

Good face coverings can fail because of a weak seal that lets unfiltered air escape or enter through gaps along the sides. By using a simple mask frame like the one pictured here, you can effectively reduce the chance of inhaling infected droplets or spreading them to others.

What about "double-masking"?

CDC recently recommended several mask modifications to increase fit, including the use of a mask fitter (frame) or wearing a second mask over a procedure mask.

Watch how we tested our simple mask frame against double-masking to see which approach better prevents unfiltered air leaks. Our results suggest the frame more effectively filters air--all without making it tough to breathe.

What is really going on?

The latest research confirms that most people become infected with Covid-19 by inhaling contaminated droplets that are ejected when talking, singing, eating, sneezing, coughing, etc.

Infectious virus particles have been observed in both large and small droplets. Larger droplets vary in size down to 0.5mm. These fall to the ground quickly, usually within 6 feet of where they are generated.

The spread of droplets

Smaller droplets range in size from about 0.5mm down to 0.001mm and can remain suspended in air for hours. These can also travel long distances on air currents. In enclosed environments with still air, small droplets can accumulate in the area where they are being generated until the area becomes highly infectious.

For these reasons, it is important to wear an effective face covering and avoid crowds. And, to help lower the risk of Covid-19 transmission further, see these mask-wearing tips and tricks.
